GMA AWARDS: Posted 3/20/2008 10:34:35 PM

The votes are in---Wednesday was the deadline for the Gospel Music Association members to vote for who they believe is best in the many categories of Christian music. We wont know the winners until April 23rd, but the Group of the Year category will definitely be a tough competition. The list includes contemporary favorites Casting Crowns, Point of Grace and Selah,. along with rockers David Crowder Band and Hillsong United, as well as gospel ladies The Clark Sisters and southern gospel Ernie Haase and Signature Sound.Casting Crowns, The Clark Sisters and Point of Grace are also nominees for Artist of the Year. Natalie Grant, a recent visitor to Norfolk, adds another nomination to her list as do Skillet, TobyMac and Chris Tomlin.The most exciting category is New Artist of the Year. With Mandisa, Group 1 Crew, Rush of Fools, Austins Bridge, and Dewayne Woods it makes the competition steep. For me, Brandon Heath and 33 Miles are my top two contenders so truly What Could be Better.Check out the Christian Door next time as well be looking at a few books on the shelves. Marcie Sextro is an avid Christian entertainment enthusiast who lives outside of Battle Creek with her husband, Dean and two sons, Christian and Caleb. She also has three daughters and two grandchildren and is a student at NECC finishing up her degree in Associated Arts with an emphasis in Broadcasting. Her mission is to inform the community that they have a choice in quality entertainment.

The Dove AwardsIf you love Christian music like I do the Dove nominations coming out this month add excitement to the otherwise cold Nebraska winter. This year will mark the 39th year of the Dove Awards and is the premiere award show for all your Christian favorites like gospel, bluegrass, rock and contemporary.This years nominations have Mark Hall from Casting Crowns leading the pack with six nominations including Male Vocalist and Song of the Year. Chris Tomlin comes in second with five nominations including Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist and Song of the Year for one of my favorites, Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone). Also joining Tomlin with five nominations are TobyMac and The David Crowder Band.On the ladies side of the nominations Natalie Grant was the only female to break into the Song of Year category with In Better Hands.Lets take a look at the other songs up for Song of the Year: Bring the Rain by Mercy Me East to West by Casting CrownsGive you Glory by Jeremy CampIm Not Who I Was by Brandon HeathMade to Love by TobyMacAmazing Grace by Chris TomlinTears of the Saints by LeelandUndo by Rush of FoolsBoth the male and female vocalist groups have been extended to seven nominees instead of five according to John Styll, the President of GMA, to handle the depth of variety in Christian music.A Nebraska favorite, Mark Schultz hit the Male Vocalist of the Year nominee list along with Jon Foreman, Mark Hall, Marvin Sapp, TobyMac, Chris Tomlin and Gerald Wolfe.
